According to "The Neverending Story", a novel by German author Michael Ende, "The Nothing" is a power which destroys the world "Fantastica" by absorbing it.

The Nothing is tied to the human world, it's the result of humans no longer believing in the world of fantasy. It is created by the humans' lack of imagination and reluctance to read books. Without their beliefs, Fantastica is disappearing, leaving NOTHING behind.
